Shortcuts for Microsoft Word

Useful Formatting Shortcuts for Microsoft Word: Increase/Decrease Font Size, Align, Bold, Underline, & Italicize

Microsoft Word has over 200 shortcut commands that can do everything from automatic formatting to running a word count function. There are so many shortcuts that trying to learn them all would be an overwhelming process that would require hours upon hours of practice, memorizing all the commands, and their applications. However, that does not mean we should abandon shortcuts, there are a lot of very practical shortcuts that can greatly reduce time spent working in Microsoft Word, particularly formatting text. I wanted to go over some of these more useful shortcuts for Microsoft word. Having these tools in your arsenal can make you a much more efficient at using Microsoft Word, and will allow you to format text with ease, at lightning speed.

To use any of these shortcuts, you need to highlight the text you wish to edit, and then type the appropriate shortcut command from the list below:

Align Center, Left, Right, Justify
Align Center: Press Ctrl + e
Align Left: Press Ctrl + l
Align Right: Press Ctrl + r
Justify: Press Ctrl + j

Increase/Decrease Font Size
Increase Font Size: Press Ctrl + Shift + >
Decrease Font Size: Press Ctrl + Shift + <

Bolding, Italicizing, & Underline
Bold: Press Ctrl +
Underline: Press Ctrl + u
Italicize: Press Ctrl + i

If you highlight a section of text that is not uniformly formatted and use the increase/decrease font size shortcut it will NOT remove any formatting; any pre-existing differences in font size will remain.

If you highlight a section of text that is not uniformly formatted and use one of the bolding, underlining or italicizing commands, Word will format all text to remove the selected condition. For example using the bolding shortcut would convert: This line of text. - to - This line of text.
